Renewable Resources in an Overlapping Generations Economy without Capital

چکیده
We incorporate a renewable resource into an overlapping generations model without capital and with quasi-linear preferences. Besides being an input for production the resource serves as a store of value. We characterize the dynamics, efficiency and stability of the steady state equilibria. The stability properties are sensitive to the type of the resource growth. For constant growth there is only one steady state equilibrium which is stable and efficient. In the general case of the concave growth function there are usually at least two steady state equilibria, one of which is stable and the other one unstable. The unstable steady state is efficient, but the stable one may or may not be. We study the robustness of our results by assuming a logarithmic periodic utility function. We show that for the Cobb-Douglas production function the steady state is unique and stable regardless of whether the equilibrium is efficient or inefficient. Our analytical results are illustrated by numerical calculations.

Basic to neoclassical economics is the sanctity of individual choice, the fungibility of economic goods and inputs, and faith in the market system to bring forth substitutes as reiative prices change. These notions are part of what Joseph Schumpeter called the "pre-analytic vision" of neociassicai economics (Daly t995) and they are central to the concept of weak sustainability, a topic of inten...

This paper analyzes economic uctuations in an overlapping generations economy with productive capital in which random shocks in aggregate productivity are present. Under speci c assumptions we obtain an explicit solution of the model. Applying random dynamical systems theory, we can prove that the long-run behavior of the economy is uniquely described by an asymptotically stable random xed poin...
متن کاملCalibration of Fair Social Discount Rate in Utilizing Iran Oil Resources: An Islamic View Point
There is a long tradition in economics about the question of whether intergenerational discounting is fair or not. Ramsey (1928) was the first economist that criticized the discounting and mentioned that the just rate of discounting is zero. In this paper it was tried to calculate the just rate of discounting for Iran with respect to Islamic thoughts. According to Islam, intergenerational just...

This paper studies the equilibrium dynamics of an overlapping generations model with capital, money and cash-in-advance constraints. At each date the economy can experience two different regimes. In the first one the cash-inadvance constraint is binding and money is a dominated asset. In the second one, the constraint is strictly satisfied and money has the same return as capital. When the seco...

The significance of non-renewable resources in economic development is an on-going debate between optimists and pessimists, but what insights does it provide for contemporary societies who need to choose between alternative growth paths? This paper aims to explain the depletion of non-renewable resources within the concept of externalities in order to determine the range of externalities for fu...
